The kukui nut tree is a tropical rainforest tree. Its exact origin is not fully known, as humans have carried it wherever they have settled. The earliest evidence of the tree and its nuts being used dates back 13,000 years to the tropical islands of Southeast Asia.

Indigenous peoples have prepared food from the nuts by roasting and steaming them, but in Hawaii, the kukui tree has also held exceptional spiritual and religious significance.
